Cherry Blossoms at Gyeongbokgung: When to Go and Where to Stand

Cherry blossom season was the busiest two weeks of the year at our hanbok shop. Which two weeks shifted a little each year, and we learned the timing not from forecasts but from the density of booking calls, which would thicken suddenly about ten days before the bloom.

This article answers two questions. When to go, and where to stand once you are there.

When the trees open — the numbers

The Korea Meteorological Administration defines first bloom clearly: the day when at least three blossoms are fully open on a single standard tree.

Seoul’s standard tree stands at the Seoul Weather Station in Songwol-dong, Jongno-gu, and its long-term average (1991–2020) first bloom is April 8. The KMA does not publish a continuous year-by-year series for that tree on its public site, but the Yeouido standard tree in Yeongdeungpo-gu has a full published record. It is close enough to read the trend.

What matters here is not any single year but the drift. From 2005 to 2013, first bloom landed in a window from April 6 to April 15. Since 2014, the window has been March 25 to April 5. The season has shifted forward by roughly seven to ten days.

In practical terms:

• Aim for the first week of April as a default.
• There is a real chance of catching the bloom in the last week of March, so if you arrive then, you may already see it.
• From first bloom to peak takes three to eight days. After peak, one rain-and-wind storm can strip the trees in a day or two. If your stay is short, precise timing is difficult.
• Booking flights around cherry blossoms is a gamble. Build an itinerary that works without them. If the blossoms happen to be there, you win twice.

For 2026, Seoul’s first bloom was forecast for April 3. The actual observation date is updated in this article each year.

There are not many cherry trees inside Gyeongbokgung

This is the most important sentence in the article. Gyeongbokgung does show up in cherry blossom searches, but the palace grounds are not a blossom tunnel. Gyeongbokgung was not planted as a cherry grove.

The spots inside the palace that look good in spring:

• Hyangwonjeong pond and pavilion — the pond, the pavilion, the bridge. You get a reflection.
• Gyeonghoeru Pavilion — from across the pond, wide.
• Jagyeongjeon flower wall — the patterned brickwork is its own backdrop. The photograph works even without flowers.
• Geonchunmun Gate — better known for its ginkgo in autumn, but a good spring walking route, too.

The real blossom is on the roads around the wall

Jongno-gu has built a 4.3 km green axis along the Gyeongbokgung wall — Samcheong-ro (completed 2024), Hyoja-ro, and Cheongwadae-ro (finished May 2026) linked into one shaded route.

Samcheong-ro (east wall)	Natural stone and flowering plants in a traditional garden style. Leads to the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and Samcheong-dong.
Cheongwadae road (in front of the Blue House)	25 m wide, 810 m long. Street trees and flower beds on both sides. But Blue House tours are currently suspended.
Jeongdok Library (Bukchon)	A known blossom photo spot in central Seoul. Anguk Station, exit 1.
Inwangsan Jarak-gil	2.5 km, about 1 hour 30 minutes on foot. Passes Sajikdan, Hwanghakjeong and the Yun Dong-ju poet's hill.
National Folk Museum grounds	Inside the palace perimeter but less crowded than the main courtyards.

A note on the Blue House. Public tours, which had been running since 2022, were suspended on August 1, 2025 when the presidential office moved back in. Whether and when they resume, and at what scale, was not confirmed at the time of writing. If tours do return, they are likely to be smaller and reservation-only. Pedestrian access to the wall road may also be restricted again. Check the official notice before you build Cheongwadae into your route.

The hours the crowds are not there

On a blossom weekend, Gyeongbokgung is as crowded as it gets all year. Only two things reliably worked during our ten years at the shop.

If you wear hanbok, you do not queue at the ticket office. On a blossom Saturday morning, the line at Gwanghwamun’s ticket windows gets long. Skipping it is the surest way to claim the opening-hour window. Most rental shops open between 09:00 and 09:30. If you arrive when the shop opens, change, and walk to the gate, you can be inside the palace by around 09:30.

What you actually need when wearing hanbok in spring

Late March to early April in Seoul means a wide gap between midday and early-morning or evening temperatures. It feels fine during the day, then sharply cold once the sun drops.

• Decide where you will leave your coat. Most shops will store your belongings.
• It is a windy season. A skirt lifting in the breeze makes a good photograph, but check your hair ornaments often.
• If you have pollen allergies, bring a mask. Early April in Seoul is pollen and fine dust overlapping.
• Rain clears the crowds. A wet stone courtyard reflecting the eaves makes a picture you cannot get on a sunny day.

After the blossoms are gone, this neighbourhood keeps going

Cherry blossom season is short. Every year we met travellers who arrived a few days late, the petals already on the ground.

But the same streets come back in autumn. Seoul’s downtown foliage peaks between late October and mid-November. The average peak by species: ginkgo October 28, oak October 31, maple November 1. The ginkgo trees at Geonchunmun, the foliage around Hyangwonjeong, the flower wall at Jagyeongjeon — all become photo spots again. I plan to write the autumn version as a separate article.

And even without flowers, this neighbourhood has walls and roof tiles and stone paving. Over ten years, the customers who came back with the best photographs were never the ones who came on peak-blossom weekend. They were the ones who came on an ordinary weekday morning. Because nobody else was there.
