How to Get to Gyeongbokgung from Anywhere in Seoul

When I ran my shop near Gyeongbokgung, the reason a customer was late for their booking was almost always the same. They got the station right but took the wrong exit. Or they lost time hauling luggage from the airport. This page exists to eliminate both.

Gyeongbokgung Station — Pick the Wrong Exit and You Lose Ten Minutes

Using Exit 5 means no street crossing. On a rainy day or in mid-summer, this makes more of a difference than you would think. The National Palace Museum also connects from this exit underground.

One thing to note: the Gwanghwamun ticket booth is on the south side of the palace. Exit 5 brings you in from the west side of the grounds, so if you need to buy a ticket, you will have to backtrack slightly toward Gwanghwamun. If you are in hanbok and exempt, the problem disappears — you simply show your proof at Heungnyemun Gate.

Anguk Station — Bukchon, Insadong, Changdeokgung

Anguk Station to the Gyeongbokgung main gate is about a ten-minute walk. From Gwanghwamun Station (Line 5), Exit 2, it is about seven minutes.

Getting Here from Within Seoul

A pattern emerges. Transfer to Line 3 at Chungmuro is the standard route from the southern side of the city centre. From Gangnam, you stay on Line 3 the whole way. There is circulating online advice about taking a bus from Hongdae, but no practical direct route exists. (Bus 7025 runs from Eunpyeong Depot past Dongnimmun, Gyeongbokgung and Anguk Station to Dongdaemun — it is not a Hongdae route.) From Hongdae, the subway is the better option.

Times include transfer walking and typical waits and are approximate, not measured.

From Incheon Airport

Route 6011 is the most precise option for the Gyeongbokgung area. It stops directly at Anguk Station and Gyeongbokgung Station. Children: 12,000 won.

The bus has only one advantage: no transfers. But anyone who has hauled two large suitcases through two subway transfers knows exactly how large that advantage is. The disadvantage is road traffic. During rush hour, the bus can take far longer than the subway.

Airport Railroad (AREX)

• Express train: Non-stop to Seoul Station, about 40 minutes, reserved seating.
• All-stop train: Stops at every station, about 60–68 minutes to Seoul Station.

From Seoul Station, take Line 4 → transfer at Chungmuro → Line 3 to Gyeongbokgung. Or get off at Jonggak (Line 1) or Gwanghwamun (Line 5) and walk.

Taxi

Incheon Airport to Seoul has a fixed-fare scheme called the International Taxi.

These fixed fares include tolls. A regular metered taxi will usually come in slightly lower, but tolls are charged separately to the passenger. Incheon Airport is in a joint operating zone with Seoul, so the 20% out-of-city surcharge does not apply.

Seoul city taxi fares are as follows.

When the taxi drops below 15.72 km/h, a time charge (100 won per 30 seconds) applies on top. The Gwanghwamun area is frequently congested, so even short rides can run up higher than expected.

From Gimpo Airport

Gimpo Airport Station is served by Lines 5 and 9, the Airport Railroad, the Gimpo Goldline and the Seohae Line, but not Line 3. A transfer is unavoidable.

• Line 9 → transfer at Express Bus Terminal → Line 3 to Gyeongbokgung
• Or Line 5 → get off at Gwanghwamun Station, then a seven-minute walk

Transport Cards and Fares — What Is Changing in 2026

The subway base fare is 1,550 won. It rose to 1,400 won in October 2023 and to 1,550 won on 28 June 2025. Cash is 1,650 won. Youths: 900 won. Children: 550 won. First boarding before 06:30 gets a 20% discount (1,240 won).

Transfer rules:

• Within 30 minutes of exiting, up to five consecutive transfers.
• 21:00 to 07:00: 60 minutes.
• Base fare covers the first 10 km, then 100 won per 5 km.
• If the subway and bus fares differ, the higher one applies.

There is an important change to the Climate Card. As the government’s K-Pass and the Climate Card are consolidated, the Climate Card will end on 30 September 2026. The last day for loading a prepaid 30-day pass is 31 August; the last usable day is 29 September. A successor product, the Climate Pass, launches on 1 September but is closer to a reimbursement scheme for Seoul residents.

What matters for travellers is the short-term pass. The 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7-day passes will continue under the Climate Card name. But you need to know exactly what they cover.

• Seoul subway sections, Seoul city and village buses: covered.
• Airport buses: not covered.
• Airport Railroad: Seoul Station to Gimpo Airport section only.

In other words, assume it cannot be used for transport from Incheon Airport. If you plan to use public transport four or five times a day or more within the city, the short-term pass pays off. Otherwise, a T-money card with pay-as-you-go is simpler.

T-money cards are sold at convenience stores (CU, GS25, e-mart24, etc.). The T-money Travel Card Plus for visitors is about 6,000 won; the K-Pass Basic is about 4,000 won.

Luggage — A Problem to Solve Before You Put on Hanbok

The number of people coming straight from the airport to Gyeongbokgung has grown every year. Customers rolling suitcases into the rental shop were common.

There are three options.

1. Subway lockers — about 5,500 lockers across 279 stations on Seoul Lines 1–9. The T-locker (Ttottarakkeo) app lets you check locations and availability and reserve a locker in real time. You will need to check the app for the exact count and rates at Gyeongbokgung and Anguk Stations.
2. Hanbok shop lockers — most shops will hold your bag while you change. Whether they can take a large suitcase varies by shop. The shop detail pages on this site list storage availability for each one.
3. Airport pickup and luggage delivery services — if you have a lot of luggage or need to cover your city itinerary before check-in, this is the most secure option. I have covered it in a separate article: Airport Pickup and Luggage Delivery.
